The World Sports Car teams came to the final round of the 1988 series with both manufacturers and drivers titles decided. Jean Louis Schlesser and Jochen Mass headed the Sauber Mercedes team with Mauro Baldi and Stefan Johansson. Newly crowned World Champion Martin Brundle wanted to end his great season with a victory, and he was teamed with Eddie Cheever in the leading Silk Cut Jaguar.
