This 1,000 km round of the Championship was controversially run in two heats, a decision that was universally unpopular with all teams. Qualifying saw both Sauber-Mercedes fastest in qualifying leaving their closest rivals, the Silk Cut Jaguars, over 2 seconds behind. The first leg on Saturday evening was a 3 hour slip-and-slide session held in damp and murky conditions with failing light. The combination of lightweight, multi-horsepowered vehicles and the Nurburgring's notoriously puddled surface presented a bigger problem to the drivers than any found so far this year and there are incidents a-plenty. The driver who would take victory was he who was prepared to drive to absolute limits of adhesion, without straying over the fine line 'twixt success and spin off!
Many took on the challenge and failed!
The second leg, on Sunday was hardly better weatherwise, but the drivers could at least see where the puddles were! As early as the first lap in the second heat, both the Sauber and Silk Cut teams were effectively down to one car per team. Two seperate 'incidents' on that opening lap saw the instant retirement of Baldi in the Mercedes, and the Dumfrles/Lammers 'Cat was delayed for repairs after an 'off.
To attain victory in these appalling conditions takes skill, talent and luck; this film once more shows the best sportscar drivers in the world hard at work in an entertaining and interesting programme format.
