After claiming his first World Rally Championship victory at the 1988 Tour de Corse, Auriol established himself among the WRC’s leading drivers with Lancia before moving to Toyota. In 1994, behind the wheel of the Toyota Celica Turbo 4WD, he made history by becoming France’s first World Rally Champion.

Across a WRC career spanning more than two decades, Auriol competed for some of rallying’s biggest names, including Lancia, Toyota, Subaru, SEAT, Peugeot and Škoda, recording 20 WRC victories and 53 podium finishes. His mastery of the Tour de Corse was particularly impressive, winning the famously demanding event six times.
