The 1998 Privilege Insurance British GT Championship delivered a thrilling season of high-speed drama, unpredictable weather, and intense battles between powerful GT1 machinery and the nimble GT2 challengers.
The battle for overall victory and the GT1 championship was between the works Lister Storm, the McLaren F1 GTR, and various Porsche 911 GT1 entries, plus the series featured the Ford Cosworth powered Harrier-GT1-98 and the awesome debut of the TVR Cerbera Speed 12.
The reigning champions Steve O' Rourke and Tim Sugden (McLaren F1 GTR) secured a strong win at Oulton Park and another victory at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps, which kept them in them title hunt. The works Lister Storm of Julian Bailey and Tiff Needell/Anthony Reid found their winning form later in the season and despite an embarrassing oil line failure on the warmup lap retiring them at Croft, they secured a dominant 1-2 finish for Lister at Snetterton and took the win in the final dramatic round at Silverstone, narrowly missing the overall title.
It was a GT2 car that took took the overall Championship title and the Chrysler Viper GTS-R driven by Kurt Luby and Richard Dean won 6 out of the 9 GT2 class races and did enough to keep the Lister Storm at bay in the overall standings.
