Silverstone saw the fourth round of the World Sportscar championship, the last event before Le Mans.
Tom Walkinshaw's Silk Cut Jaguars, winners of the previous two rounds, were looking for a hat-trick of wins at this Autosport-sponsored event. It was at this meeting in 1986 that Eddie Cheever drove the big cat to its first major motorsport victory. Cheever won again in '87, so was also looking forward to a personal hat-trick. Team Sauber's V-8 Mercedes C9 again provided the strongest challenge, with Jean-Louis Schlesser taking pole position on the grid. From flagfall, a mighty dice developed between Cheever (Jaguar) and both Sauber Mercedes’, driven by Schlesser and Mauro Baldi. The cut and thrust has to be seen to be believed!
This video gets you to the heart of the action as the thundering beasts give their all for victory. Next stop - Le Mans!
