Round 1 of the 1983 FIA World Endurance Championship was held at Monza. The opening round saw the Rothmans Porsche team which dominated the 1982 season under threat from the similarly works-supported Lancia Martinis as well as some privately entered Porsche 956's. These 650 bhp Group C cars formed the pinnacle of sports car racing in the Eighties with colour, glamour and spectacle on a par with Formula One.
