The racing in the 1989 500 GP Series got better and better as the season progressed and the Belgian round did little to lower the pace or the standard. Forty thousand avid fans lined Belgium's Namur circuit with the majority of Belgian fans hoping to see their national hero, Eric Geboers (Honda) stop the unseemingly unstoppable David Thorpe on his Honda.
