Ettelbruck in Luxembourg was the final curtain call for the exciting 1988 500 Motocross championship. With the championship sewn up by Erik Geboers at Namur the races were no less exciting. No's 1 and 2 in the World this year Geboers and Kurt Nicoll crashed together in a first-leg, first lap tangle which saw the champ sidelined but watch Nicoll’s determined charge up through the field from last to a magnificent leaderboard place.
The charge was maintained through the second Moto, to give Nicoll a fine finish to his already superb season. With three Brits in the first ten, Nicoll, Banks and Smith it was a fitting climax to a stunning season.
