The North and East Midlands area of England has a proud industrial history, much of which is bound up in the history of the railways of the country.
Situated in the heart of the North and East Midlands is one of the country's greatest coalfields, the very lifeblood of the steam railway. Many fabulous companies served the area, notably the London and North Western Railway, the Great Central Railway and the Midland Railway. Today many of their steam locomotives can still be seen hard at work on both the preserved railways and the main lines of the Midlands as the great railway preservation movement has striven to keep their memories alive.
The measure of their success can be seen in this programme, which records the splendour and the Glory of Steam in the North & East Midlands.
