A colourful kaleidoscope of six film extracts from the Isle of Man’s tourism archive. Happy memories indeed!
Local journalist Terry Cringle presents ‘Trophy Island’ (1949), which set the scene for the 1949 TT including a unique piece featuring the last native speaker of Manx gaelic; ‘This Week In Britain’ (1978), (made by the British Central Office of Information) focuses on the pro-birch campaign of the time; ‘Fairways To The Isle Of Man’ (1976), filmed during one of the hottest summers on record is narrated by well-known golf commentator Peter Allis; ‘The Isle Of Man’ (1957), recalls the days when itinerant workers came to the island each year to work in Peel’s kipper factories; ‘The Proud Islander’ (1963), looks at the Isle of Man through the eyes of a local horse tram driver and features the Casino and weekly bathing beauty competitions in the Villa Marina; ‘Holiday Island’ (1960s), includes the then glamorous Port Soderick, old time dance festivals, the annual Douglas Carnival Parade and pop music competitions in the Palace Ballroom judged by a young Jimmy Saville and David Jacobs.
