The 1987 Kuwait Rally marked the second round of the Middle East Rally Championship, which was the only remaining series that still allowed “Group B” supercars to compete, following the banning of the class in the WRC.
The winner of round 1 in Qatar, Saeed Al-Hajri in the Rothmans Porsche 911, was up against his main rival and reigning champion Mohammed Bin Sulayem in the Toyota Celica turbo and Lasse Lampi was another event favourite in the Mitsubishi Starion turbo.
