The Safari Rally was legendary before it was ever included in the World Rally Championship.

Epic stages across the varied terrain of Kenya and East Africa, pushed drivers and cars to the limits. And that was before the weather or wildlife intervened.

Digitised from original 35mm film, this review of the 1981 edition of the rally shows the incredible challenge faced to finish every stage, let alone the entire rally.

There were 49 retirements and only 21 finishers, with locals such as Mehta and Kirkland to the fore. 

A bonus feature on this disc is the inclusion of "Winning the Safari Rally" an account of the 1976 event which saw only 12 finishers of 61 entries.
