The extremely demanding Imola circuit was the venue for the third race of 1986 with Lotus driver Ayrton Senna leading the championship with 15 points. As this video shows, foremost in everybody's mind was the problem of heavy fuel consumption. The Williams Hondas of Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell were anxious to overcome Senna's early advantage. Alain Prost and Keke Rosberg (Marlboro McLaren) were equally keen to make up for disappointment in Rio de Janiero. Then there were the Benettons, Arrows, Ligiers, Ferraris, Brabhams and Renaults all tearing round the 61 laps at nearly 200 kph.
