Packed stadiums in Gdansk and Wroclaw in Poland watched in eager anticipation as speedway stars including Mark Loram (GB, 2000 World Champion), Scott Nicholls (GB), Jason Crump (Aus), Tony Rickardsson (Sweden), Sebastian Ulamek (Poland) and Greg Hancock (USA) battled round the oval for their respective national squads in a breathtaking blaze of dirt track spills and thrills. The competition was further heightened by the new race formula - as five riders instead of the usual four took to the track.
It was a closely fought affair. Host nation Poland found themselves going into the last heat leading Australia by just one point! Could they do enough to hold on?
