Ducati’s lightning strike start and Carl Fogarty’s first win at the very first race (Kyalami) signalled a clear warning to teams and riders.

However, Ducati teammate Troy Corser, Honda’s Colin Edwards and Aaron Slight, Pierfrancesco Chili of Suzuki, and the Yamaha-mounted Noriyuki Haga took the fight to the loudmouth Lancastrian with gusto.
