2013: The Year of Marc Marquez. The Spanish rookie is certainly no stranger to the world of motorcycle racing having twice been a world champion. Big things were expected of him but no-one anticipated just what he’d achieve in his first year in motorcycle racing’s premier class.
Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa were as impressive as always in pre-season testing and Britain’s Cal Crutchlow was showing promise on the Tech3 Monster Energy Yamaha. Stefan Bradl had people talking about his performances on the LCR Honda and Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista had found a good run of form.
Big news ahead of the season was the return of ‘The Doctor,’ Valentino Rossi, to the Yamaha fold – could he end his two year winning drought?
Andrea Dovisioso moved to Ducati to partner Nicky Hayden meaning there was a mouth watering, and super-competitive season in prospect.
Right from the first race at Losail it was exciting but when Marc Marquez stormed through at the Circuit of the Americas to become the youngest ever rider to win a top-class race the season really burst into life.
From then to the end of the season it was excitement and drama all the way as Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo and young-gun Marc Marquez went head-to-head for the ultimate honour in motorcycle racing.
