Rumba began with African slaves imported into Cuba, whose dances emphasised body movements rather than feet. Tune was considered less important than complex percussive cross rhythms. Rumba evolved in Havanna where ‘rhum ’ is intoxicating liquor popular in the Caribbean. Indigenous and Spanish influences mixed in providing the tuneful force that modern Rumba has become.
