Smoothness and rich vocal colour with exceptional phrasing made Nat King Cole’s voice one of America’s all-time favourites. Yet this was no “Sepia Sinatra”. The popularity of his vocals overshadowed the inventiveness of his piano playing. Musicians, however knew origination when they heard it. Peers’ respect and over 15 million records sold – that’s tribute.
