With his domination of the world of two-wheel racing, including
numerous wins at the Isle of Man TT and multiple World Championship victories,
it is no wonder Mike Hailwood is still fondly known as ‘Mike the Bike’.
But Hailwood was also a ferocious racer on four wheels.
This photograph, from the archives of LAT, shows Hailwood
getting ready for action during a round of the 1972 Formula One World
Championship. He couldn’t match his motorcycle success in car racing, but
Hailwood scored several top 10 finishes in F1, including a dramatic second
place at the Italian Grand Prix in 1972.
