Barbara McQueen had remained silent about her marriage to the Hollywood star since his death in 1980, but more than a quarter of a century later she decided to complete a project the couple had been planning before he was diagnosed with cancer. The result is Steve McQueen: The Last Mile, a touching and personal tribute to a giant of the silver screen. It focuses on his final three years, the time when he turned his back on Hollywood in favour of a less visible, more private life. He and Barbara took to the open road, travelling in pick-up trucks and meeting ‘ordinary’ people. Throughout the period they spent together, Barbara charted their relationship in hundreds of intimate photos. The couple had planned to publish the pictures alongside words by Steve in a volume entitled The Long Haul, but the diagnosis of his illness ended that dream.
