Product description

Best Mate had become the first horse since Arkle in the 1960's to win three successive Cheltenham Gold Cups, and in doing so he quickly became the 'people's champion'. Tragically though, despite looking in great condition, Best Mate sadly died during his seasonal return at Exeter on the afternoon of November 1st 2005.

Scripted and narrated by Channel 4 racing presenter and leading racing post journalist Alastair Down, Best Mate – The Icon is the official DVD which tells the story of the horse and the humans involved with him.

Product features:

• The official DVD story of Best Mate.

• Including the thoughts of trainer Henrietta Knight, jockey Jim Culloty and owner Jim Lewis.

• Presented and scripted by Channel 4’s Alastair Down.

• 110 minutes running time.

Best Mate – The Icon DVD is a tribute to the courage of the first chaser to win 3 Cheltenham Gold Cups since Arkle, the dedication of his trainer Henrietta Knight who nurtured his brilliant talent with such skill, the coolness of his jockey Jim Culloty who was born to ride him and the unbridled affection of owner Jim Lewis who simply loved his “matey”.

Best Mate quickly became the 'people's champion' following his successive Gold Cup victories at Cheltenham in 2002, 2003 and 2004. His first race win in Britain was also at Cheltenham in 1999. It was therefore fitting that a ceremony, following his tragic death at Exeter on November 1st 2005, was held at Cheltenham on December 10th.

This is a fitting tribute to a wonderful race horse – Best Mate.
