Teutonic giants, American heavyweights, gutsy Gauls,
aerodynamic Brits…
The World’s best sports car teams came to the 68th
running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans with all guns blazing – and what a race
ensued! Over a gruelling 24 hour period those spectators who could keep pace
with the action at the magnificent Circuit de la Sarthe witnessed a level of
stamina, driving skill, engineering prowess and teamwork that is simply unique
to this gargantuan event.
These are drivers with experience of endurance, touring car and
Grand Prix racing but nowhere are they pushed as hard as they are here…
Of the teams entered – Panoz, Chrysler, Cadillac, Reynard,
WR, Porsche, Lola, Viper, Corvette and many privateers – some came determined
to win, others were just aiming for a finish. Right from the ‘flaming’ start to
Frank Biela’s marathon stint in the closing stages, it was the Audi Sport Team
Joest R8s piloted by Biela, Pirro and ’97 Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen that
dominated the leaderboard.
By Sunday evening there were three Audis on the podium -
achieving a 1-2-3 to equal Ford, Peugeot and Porsche.
