The 78th running of the Le Mans 24 Hours Race saw Audi determined to take revenge on arch-rivals Peugeot, but its fleet of R15-plus TDIs faced a monumental struggle to overcome the race-winning performance of the 908 HDi.
The raw pace of the Peugeots in practice and qualifying showed just what a task Audi faced, but when the clock hit 3pm on Saturday, June 12, the tables turned. Over the next 24 hours the four-strong Peugeot team was struck by mechanical woes which allowed Audi roar home first, second and third.
The Official Review is packed with the essential highlights of more than 3,000 miles of racing, charting the story of how Timo Berhnard, Romain Dumas and Mike Rockenfeller guided their R15-plus to an historic victory. In addition to thrilling race action, we see the build-up to the race, including qualifying, hear from the leading drivers and enjoy an on-board lap of the 8.47-mile Circuit De La Sarthe courtesy of the most successful Le Mans driver of all time, Audi’s Tom Kristensen, who provides fascinating commentary.
We hear from a heart-broken Henri Pescarolo, experience Formula One World Champion Nigel Mansell’s short-lived debut at Le Mans, and join the celebrations of Chevrolet’s 50th year at Le Mans and the 40th anniversary of Porsche’s first outright victory. There’s also a chance to relive a golden era of Le Mans history with a race between the Group C legends of 1982-92.
But this review is about racing, and stunning action footage lets us relive the gripping drama of the LMP1 battle, share the pain of Peugeot’s catastrophes and witness the exhilaration of Audi’s domination of the podium.
Plus, we recall the showdowns in LMP2, GT2 and the new-look GT1 class.
"Cast yourself back to last summer with this official DVD review of the 2010 Le Mans 24 Hours. It covers the build-up and qualifying, plus the race itself, and is split into five sections, with an hour spent on the battles in the LMP1, LMP2, GT2 and GT1 classes chronologically. There's informed commentary - we particularly liked the French reaction to the problems suffered by Peugeot. A fine souvenir. Four stars" Auto Express
