Rothmans Honda star Wayne Gardner travelled to South America seeking to secure his first 500cc World Championship on a track completely unknown to him. Few riders were acquainted with the Goiania circuit 150 kms south east of the country's capital Brasilia. Randy Mamola on the Lucky Strike Yamaha had to try to maintain his title challenge against Gardner and fend off Eddie Lawson on the rival Marlboro Yamaha.
