Using unique archive film of the late 1920s, this progamme looks at the amalgamation of the Victoria companies in 1923 to the form the 'Big Four' railways - The Great Western, The Southern, Midland & Scottish and London & North Eastern. Both common and rare locomotive types are featured including Great Western 'Dukes' and A1 Pacifics.
Decades of Steam - 1930s
The 1930s was a period of austerity for the railways as they tried to meet the competition of the roads. The GWR, LMS, and LNER embarked on massice steam locomotive constuction programmes and this programme visits vast locations to see steam at work, from the great main lines to the rural branches.
