The sixties saw British single-cylinder racing motorcycles
dominate on the domestic scene.
It was a decade in which stars like Bob
McIntyre, Derek Minter, Mike Hailwood, Phil Read, Bill Ivy and Peter Williams
came to the fore, learning their craft on evenly matched G50 Matchlesses, AJS
7Rs or ‘Manx’ Nortons.
Until the arrival on the scene of the Yamaha TR2 these ‘over-the-counter’
racers were the epitome of competitive affordable and fast machines.
The
closely matched bikes made for very close racing, and emphasised skill and
craft over bravery and the ability to accelerate quickly and brake late
(although that helped of course).
This new book charts that exciting decade,
exploring the riders, their machines and the wonderful races they had.
