The biggest golf tournament Spain had ever seen - World Cup Golf by Philip Morris - took place during November, 1989. Thirty-two nations gathered from all over the world for this ‘35th Festival of Goodwill’ as described by its inaugurator, American Industrialist John J Jopkins. Mark McCumber partnered by Ryder Cup team-mate Paul Azinger, defended the World Cup title for the USA. Amongst the favourites who challenged the Americans (looking for a first World Cup win for Scotland) were the experienced duo of Sam Torrance & Gordon Brand.
