349 cars, 115 trucks and 206 motorcycles embarked on the 1988 Paris-Dakar desert race. Peugeot returned with Ari Vatanen and Juha Kankkunen. In the truck class, Jan de Rooy (DAF) was favourite and in the bike class Honda's Cyril Neveau was fancied. From Paris, through the wastes of North Africa and onwards to the shores of the Atlantic at Dakar, 7500 miles away raced Jacky Ickx, Jacques Laffite, Jean Pierre Jabouille, Jean Louis Schlesser.
