Round 1 of the eight round 1989 World Sportcar Championship in Suzuka, Japan – with over 30 TV cameras present to record every significant occurrence - set the pace in spectacular style by proving that sportscar racing can have all the glamour of Formula 1. Right from the first green light the season proved to be one of the most impressive yet and certainly the most challenging. The Japanese factory teams of Toyota, Nissan and Mazda were determined to achieve recognition and success along with the rest of the best including Jaguar, Aston Martin and a semi-official Porsche effort. However, the masters of perfection, the Mercedes team guided by Peter Sauber, looked stronger than ever at Suzuka when the Silver Arrows' intentions became unmistakably clear.
From Suzuka to Mexico City, via Dijon, Jarama, Brands Hatch, Nurburgring, Donington and Spa - it's a rage of battles between the big names of WSC racing, including WoIIek/JeIInski( Porsche), Lammers/Tambay (Jaguar), Schlesser/Mass (Mercedes), Balley/Blundell (Nissan), Dumfrles/Lees (Toyota) and Baldi/Acheson (Mercedes). The Silk Cut Jaguar team, after three years of consistent success, suddenly found their world crumbling around them. Did the mid-season introduction top secret XJR1O/11 - the phantom turbo - change their dwindling fortunes? Quite apart from the results of the Championship the whole 2,394.92 mile, 874 lap series revealed a dramatic rise in competitiveness, superb circuits, factory support and marvellous racing, which clearly indicates that World Sportscar Racing is destined for great things during this new decade. An excellent account of a memorable season featuring some really exciting in-car camera sequences.
