As a result Damon Hill was able to close within one point following the rain-soaked Japanese Grand Prix. Hill had taken the number one seat with Williams-Renault following the tragic accident which claimed the life of one of Formula One's all-time-greats, Ayrton Senna.
It was also a big year for the Ferrari team who showed winning potential throughout the season. Some new talent also emerged, most notabley the Japanese driver Ukyo Katayama and Ireland's Eddie Irvine.
