The Time Between (black and white 40 mins)
The Time Between takes a look at the activities of four drivers between the finish of the French Grand Prix and Rouen and the start of the British and European Grand Prix at Brands Hatch in 1964. The drivers concerned are Graham Hill, Bruce McLaren, Innes Ireland and Mike Hailwood - who talk about their lives away - albeit briefly - from the GP circuits. But they can't get away from racing. Graham, Bruce and Innes all take part in the Reims 12-Hour Sports Car Race and Mike Hailwood goes to Spa-Francorchamps where he wins the 500cc GP, but not before taking us for a high speed lap of this fabulous circuit on his four-cylinder MV. He also makes his preference for the motorcycle world very clear! Innes demonstrates the remarkable Sno Track in the Highlands of Scotland; Graham wears his business man's suit at Speedwell Engineering and we briefly eavesdrop on a meeting of the Grand Prix Drivers Association before the start of the British GP at Brands. Which lead us very nicely into:
The European Grand Prix 1964 (colour 33mins)
This was the first GP to be held at Brands Hatch and commentator Anthony Marsh shows us how the circuit had been improved for the occasion, which was also the European GP that year. We pay a visit to the BRM works at Bourne, where Graham Hill discusses gear ratios with Tony Rudd and, at Coopers in Surbiton, Bruce McLaren looks forward to the recently announced 2-litre Formula One for 1966. John Surtees (who would win the world championship in 1964) talks about the problems - some of them - of driving for Ferrari. From start to finish the race is between Jim Clark (Lotus) and Graham Hill (BRM), with John Surtees (Ferrari) and Jack Brabham (Brabham) playing strong supporting roles. The colour photography is superb and offers a sad reminder that Brands Hatch is a great Grand Prix ciruit gone to waste. The day ends with Chris Barber and his band blowing up a storm for the fans on the start/finish line.
