    Product description

Stirling is a meeting point of road and rail routes and particularly in the steam era was an important focal point on Scotland’s rail network. The programme opens with views of Stirling, before heading north-east by steam to Callander, Killin Junction and the branch to Killin. Views of Oban and Connel Ferry, with its dual road and rail bridge, complete coverage of Stirling’s coastal link. Next is Gleneagles, which was linked by a branch line to Crieff and Comrie, which were also linked to Perth: and both routes are featured in detail.

At Larbert, the railbus service between Falkirk and Grangemouth is shown, together with views of Grangemouth, Polmont and Bathgate – with its many stored steam locomotives – together with film of Winchburgh’s shale industry and its narrow-gauge system.

East of Stirling is Alloa and a steam-powered swing bridge at nearby Throsk gave Alloa a link to the Glasgow main line at Larbert and action views of this now-closed bridge are shown. Film of the Devon Valley line from Alloa to Perth via Kinross includes scenes at Tillicoultry, Dollar and Rumbling Bridge. Concluding the programme is film of the now-closed route to Dunfermline, featuring the town’s stations and locomotive depot.
