With youngsters Sam Tomkins and Kyle Eastmond paired at half back and mighty Sam Burgess in rampaging form, two-try winger Peter Fox sealed a famous victory.
The Kangeroos, inspired by retiring skipper Darren Lockyer, had beaten the hosts at the group stage 26-16, despite a fantastic second half rally from Tony Smith’s side.
This time England started well and with Burgess again outstanding they led with just over a quarter of the game to play. They couldn’t hang on as the Aussies stormed back with a six try blitz!
