Lawrence Dallaglio selects England’s best six games from the new Millennium - and what a selection!
16th February 2002 - England 45-11 Ireland: A rampant England surged to the top of the Zurich World Rankings after racking up six tries in a 45-11 Six Nations Championship win. A day when England went as close to perfection in the first half as Twickenham has ever seen.
24th November 2001 - England 29-9 South Africa: A clinical display of counter-attacking rugby and solid defence saw England record their third consecutive victory over South Africa at Twickenham, beating the Boks by a record margin of 29-9. In doing so Clive Woodward's men became the first European nation to gain five successive test victories over southern hemisphere opposition.
10th November 2001 - England 21-15 Australia: Retaining the Cook Cup they won last year, England's hero was Jonny Wilkinson, as his five penalties and two drop-goals saw them triumphant in a game where their superb 15-0 first half performance was blighted by a jittery second period as a 'Jekyll and Hyde' Australia were denied by some stern defence, and superb goal-kicking.
7th April 2001 - England 48-19 France: Six converted tries and a monumental kicking milestone for Jonny Wilkinson were witnessed by a packed Twickenham stadium, as England came back from three points down at the break to demolish France 48-19 in a pulsating Lloyds TSB Six Nations Championship encounter.
2nd December 2000 - England 25-17 South Africa: This was the game when England proved that they had come of age. Having led 19-9 at the break, England held off a concerted South African effort early in the second half to win 25-17 and prove that the win in Bloemfontein in June was no fluke. As a bonus we include Jonny Wilkinson’s breathtaking kicking display as he scored every point in that epic 27-22 victory at the Free State Stadium to square the two-test series 1-1.
18th November 2000 – England 22-19 Australia: Drama doesn’t come much better than this! Dan Luger’s last-minute try hangs in the balance until video referee Brian Stirling rubber-stamps it. Then over to Jonny Wilkinson’s brilliant touchline conversion and the celebrations could begin in earnest.
