    Product description

The Halifax four engine heavy bomber was the unsung hero of RAF Bomber Command during the Second World war. It flew some 39,000 sorties over enemy territory, carried cargoes and dropped agents as well as bombs, towed gliders and pioneered electronic warfare. 6,178 were built, with Handley Page turning out a complete bomber every hour at the height of production. Yet, today it is almost forgotten in favour of the more famous Lancaster bomber. Capable of enduring heavy battle damage and engendering a fierce loyalty from its crews, it was nevertheless underpowered and ‘draggy', and was hated by Bomber Command's C-in-C ‘Bomber Harris who wrote that it “stinks” and that its “bad flying characteristics are killing a large number of our crews”. This unique profile of the controversial British bomber tells the story of the Halifax from its inception in 1937 to its pre-war airliner conversion. Packed with rare footage - including air-to-air material, production line footage and coverage of a Halifax ‘Christening' - it also includes exclusive interviews with ex-Halifax pilots and crew who offer vivid accounts of what the aircraft was like to fly in battle. Other highlights include the work of the Halifax Aircraft association in salvaging 644 Squadron Halifax NA 337 from the depths of a Norwegian Fjord and the incredible work now being undertaken to restore the aircraft as a tribute to those who gave their lives during the Second World War.
