Disc 1 - TITANS OF STEAM - For almost 40 years, the 'big four' railway companies and British rail turned out hundreds of powerful locomotives. This all-action programme looks at those that survived, and have found a new lease of life on preserved railways all over Britain. Mighty Pacifics of the Southern Railway, includes the Merchant Navy and West Country Classes, now work on lines such as the Great Central, North York Moors and Swanage Railways. Memories of the Great Western Railway live on in its Castles, Kings, Manors and Halls, which still operate all over the south West. The magnificent workhorses of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway steam on in the North and Midlands. The preserved locomotives of the London and North Eastern Railway include household names such as 'The Flying Scotsman' and 'Sir Nigel Gresley.' There are also War Department and British Rail Designs, culminating in might tank engines and ten-coupled freight engines.
Disc 2 - THE CLASSICS - Britain's railways have always been built on technology. From Victorian times to modern day, locomotive design has come a long way. Some engines stand out from the rest. Ancient or modern, large or small, they are the great trains, classic designs that define an era and capture the imagination. Footage includes: The prince on the Ffestiniog Railway; The 5700 class of the GWR on the Yorkshire Pennines; the Stainer Black 5s in the Forth of Faith; The Bluebell Line and Richard Maunsell's Locomotives; British Rail Class 37s cross the wild landscape of the Northern Highlands.
Disc 3 - A FEAST OF STEAM - An immense variety of live steam is featured in this incredible and unique tribute to the preserved British Steam Locomotive. There are pre-amalgamation locomotives, as well as examples from the 'big four' industrial and narrow gauge and BR standard classes. A veritable feast of steam with plenty of action.
