Round 10, August 27th-30th
Could anyone beat Markku Alen and the Martini Racing Lancia Delta HF Turbo? That was the question World Rally enthusiasts were asking as the tenth round came to his home country of Finland for the 1000 Lakes event.
This video finds the answer to that and a host of others on what is always one of the most spectacular rallies of the season. With huge jumps taken at top speed through the picturesque forests, there is no shortage of tingling excitement. The other Lancia was driven by Juha Kankkunen, but there was plenty of opposition. Ford RS Cosworths were in the capable hands of Ari Vatanen and Stig Blomqvist, both of whom were more than well-placed to spring a surprise or two. With no less than 52 timed special stages, there would be plenty of chance for the world's finest drivers and cars to show their paces. Hannu Mikkola was there with the big Audi Quattro 200, Timo Salonen was sure to be competitive with the Mazda 323 Turbo and a second car was prepared for lngvar Carlsson.
So, the scene was set for some flat-out motoring over the destructive yumps and bumps of the Finnish forests with the breathtaking scenery never far away. Let the cameras roll and stand by for the action!
