Audi, Chrysler, Dome, Ascari and the return of Bentley and MG - the exhilaration and prestige of the world's greatest motor race lives on...
The 69th running of the famous French endurance classic heralded the much hyped and hugely exciting return of two of the sport's greatest marques to the La Sarthe circuit. The Bentley Boys returned after a 71-year absence and MG also made their sportscar comeback with the EX257. All in all, 8 manufacturers, including the mighty Joest Audi works cars and a host of top-line privateer teams combined to create a 48-car field of real class for the 2001 enduro.
Torrential rain just 4 laps in sparked a 6 car pile up and throughout the race rain continued to play havoc with the drivers as they battled with the elements at racing speed. Despite the downpours, the thrills and atmosphere were as good as ever. In the end the Audi of Biela, Pirro and Kristensen proved unbeatable once more, with the team also claiming second spot, but Bentley too were celebrating with a magnificent 3rd place.
