Australia was host to the very first 500 moto of the 2000 World Championship. From the moment the gate dropped the dirt started flying, and it didn't stop until the last lap 16 rounds later in Switzerland!
Three-times World Champion Joel Smets confirmed his incredible shape from the pre-season races and took the first win of the year. As the season progressed it was clear the KTM-mounted champion was on top form. Moto after moto Smets made his rival eat dirt with his aggressive killer moves as he blasted his way around the world in search of a fourth world crown.
Further excitement at the head of the pack came from Peter Johansson (KTM) and Marnicq Bervoets (Rinaldi Yamaha). Their titanic battle for second place gathered momentum and by the final moto of the year at Roggenburg only one point separated the pair.
