The spectacular Italian hillside circuit of Maggiora played host to the 1986 Motocross des Nations, setting the scene for the all-conquering American team of David Bailey (500cc) Ricky Johnson ((250cc) and Johnny O'Mara (125cc) to challenge the world's best riders in three thrilling motos. '86 also proved to be an exciting year for the British team of 500cc World Champion David Thorpe, Jem Whatley and Rob Herring who finished a superb second place overall.
