British Steam Past and Present Bookazine - Description

This 132-page bookazine contains an evocative mix of specially commissioned modern steam images and steam era archive pictures, the majority of which have never been published before.

The recently completed rebuild of ex LMS N0. 6100 Royal Scot is heralded with an in depth study of that restoration and the history of that iconic ex LMS locomotive class, including the facts surrounding the long standing ‘which Scot went to the USA’ argument.

To commemorate the fantastic achievement of building the new steam locomotive No. 60163 Tornado there is a focus on it, and the powerful ex LNER/BR Peppercorn A1 Class which includes many exclusive archive images.

British steam new build projects continue to forge ahead and so we have taken the opportunity to review the ex LMS Patriot Class using incredible archive images. We also present an up to date progress report on the building of new locomotive No. 45551 The Unknown Warrior, including relating the fascinating history of the project.

The work of accomplished steam photographer David Anderson is highlighted in three special ‘Location in Focus’ features, studies of 1950s and 1960s steam workings at Oxford and on the mighty Beattock Bank. In addition there is the photographic record of a 1959 visit to Belfast, with unique images of steam on the Belfast – Dublin (ex GNR route).

Original photographic studies from the preservation era by David Gibson who features the Churnet Valley Railway, Paul Pettitt who features the Bluebell Railway and Southern Region locomotives, and Fred Kerr who presents an eclectic mix of Main Line Steam images, are all included. Freight locomotive preservation is not forgotten as the restored‘Q6’ 0-8-0 No. 63395 is featured, using modern and archive images. Together with many archive and new images from the author’s own collection these images present an enthralling window on steam, which is totally unrivalled.

The high quality print creates  an impressive record of ‘British Steam Power’.
