Introduction
Description
The high-speed watersport of inshore Grand Prix powerboat racing makes quite a spectacle on film and video. Tight but very fast circuits (speeds average around 90mph even on the shorter ones), and closely matched boats combine with the sheer power and speed of the modern single-seater competition catamaran (0-60mph in 4 seconds!) to provide superb entertainment for you the armchair viewer!
The Bristol GP is normally one of the most popular rounds and 1987 was no exception. The Monaco of circuit-powerboat racing with its notoriously narrow concrete wall-lined course saw Tony Williams snatch a surprise victory from American star Don Johnston and favourite Jonathon Jones from Wales. There are plenty of dramatic moments and Guido Capellini - Crashellini to his friends - maintained his untarnished reputation for crashing into a wall at 100mph and escaping unscathed. Exciting stuff which can only be matched by our other race reports from the series.
