"Out of the shadows come heroes..." - Sam Torrance.
In 1985 Sam Torrance wept after he sank the putt that finished the Americans at The De Vere Belfry and once again, in 2002, his inspiration led Europe to glory. On one of the greatest days of the competition's glorious history, the Europeans won back the Ryder Cup and avenged their defeat at Brookline in 1999.
After two days of enthralling action, the scores were level and the USA entered the final day expecting to dominate the singles. Colin Montgomerie and Bernhard Langer had played supremely, remaining unbeaten for two days, but the moment of truth had arrived for The Ryder Cup rookies. The Captain decided to send his big guns out first in a high risk, high reward strategy. As the Tiger stepped up to tee off, Torrance's Lions had already turned the scoreboard into a sea of blue and were riding on a wave of confidence. It was time for the heroes to come out of the shadows and, man for man, they played their part as they defied the odds and took on and beat America's best.
Phillip Price's sensational triumph over the world number 2, Phil Mickelson, put the Europeans within touching distance of a remarkable victory after wins by Montgomerie, Langer, Harrington and Bjorn. The stage was set for Paul McGinley, who held his nerve and holed a magnificent nine feet putt at the final hole. His decisive half point sent the crowd wild and ensured a famous and dramatic conclusion to three days of incredible golfing action.
Torrance wept again and Europe's magnificent dozen reclaimed The Ryder Cup for our Uncle Sam.
2004 Ryder Cup Official Review - USA 9.5 - 18.5 Europe DVD
Now you can relive all the highlights and emotion of the 35th Ryder Cup on this official DVD review of the 2004 Ryder Cup from the Oakland Hills Country Club.
They left as underdogs, and returned as record-breaking heroes. Europe's Ryder Cup team led by Bernhard Langer, marshalled by Montgomerie and galvanized by Garcia were golfing heroes outclassing the might of America by a record-breaking 18.5 to 9.5.
The USA boasted Tiger, Mickelson and Davis Love. Captain Hal Sutton declared his team to be the best putting side in the competition's proud history. However, from the moment that Monty rolled in an eight-foot putt on the first green on Friday's fourballs, Europe took charge. Sutton's dream team of Mickelson and Woods were beaten twice on that incredible opening day as Europe romped into a five-point lead.
Back came the US, on the second morning, stung by the ferocity of the European assault. A wounded Tiger clawed his side back into the match, but then came the turning point. European rookies Howell and Casey refused to wilt in the furnace of pressure and won a crucial, momentum swinging point, beating Furyk and Campbell by a single hole having been one down with just two to play.
The Europeans were inspired. Langer's united team went into the final day singles requiring just three points to retain The Ryder Cup. A desperate Sutton threw his top men out first and early on the scoreboards were awash with red.
The Europeans response was emphatic, Garcia, Clarke and Westwood took Europe to the brink and who else but Captain's pick Monty was there to make the final, decisive putt.
By the end of an unforgettable day the scoreboard was a sea of blue and Oakland Hills echoed to the sound of European Cheer.
2006 Ryder Cup Official Review - Europe 18.5 - 9.5 USA DVD
Now you can relive all the highlights and emotion of the 36th Ryder Cup on this official DVD review of the 2006 Ryder Cup.
The 2006 Ryder Cup was held in Ireland for the very first time, at the K Club, Straffan in Co. Kildare. A warm and enthusiastic Irish welcome was guaranteed, and it was an emotional return to golf for Darren Clarke.
After 3 days of compelling golf the European golf team, led by captain Ian Woosnam, finally triumphed by a record-equalling 18.5 to 9.5 points, clinching the Samuel Ryder Trophy for the third consecutive time.
Across three compelling days in September 2006 Europe's elite went head-to-head with America's all stars at the K Club in Dublin. With the European team striving for an unprecedented third consecutive victory and the US, led by world No. 1 Tiger Woods, eager to avenge their record defeat in 2004, the 36th Ryder Cup was set to become one of the greatest golfing events of all time.
After the first day Europe led USA by 5 - 3. By the end of the second day Europe had extended their lead to 10 - 6, needing just four-and-a-half points to win. So, it was down to the singles on the final day...
As so often on Ryder Cup Sunday in recent times, the end came suddenly as Europe claimed the points they needed within a golden 15-minute spell. England's David Howell won four successive holes - all with birdies - to close out a 5 and 4 victory over rookie Brett Wetterich and when Chad Campbell found the water with his second at the 17th against Luke Donald, the crowd held its collective breath. The world number nine chipped his third shot to six feet and calmly rolled in the putt - 14 points and the Ryder Cup was staying in Europe.
Immediately attention turned to who would hole the winning putt, and the popular choice was obviously Darren Clarke. But the Ulsterman was beaten to that honour by Swede Henrik Stenson, who holed a six-footer at the 14th for a 4 and 3 victory over Vaughn Taylor. Europe had won all five sessions for the first ever time.
That sparked the inevitable jubilant and highly emotional scenes as Dublin prepared for the party that it had been promising for the last two years.
So now sit back and enjoy all the highlights and special moments over and over again on this official DVD review. Capturing the intensity, rivalry an emotion of this magnificent sporting occasion, this programme runs for over two hours and features highlights of all the thrilling decisive - unmissable viewing for all European golf fans.
