After the fall of France, Adolf Hitler was prepared to launch a massive sea borne invasion of Southern England - but only if the German Air Force, the Luftwaffe, could gain control of the skies. The fight for air superiority over England - the Battle of Britain - was to last three months from July to September 1940, with desperately-stretched RAF squadrons of Spitfires and Hurricanes sent time and again against successive waves of German fighters and bombers. Luftwaffe raids against English aerodromes almost succeeded in breaking the RAF's ability to fight - but a change of target to England's cities gave it the break it needed to recover. No-one knew on the morning of 15th September 1940 that the decisive air battle would be fought that very day. There was perfect visibility. The swarms of German bombers despatched to decimate London would be able to find their target easily - but there were no clouds to hide them from the RAF fighters being vectored onto them in their hundreds
