Round 1 of the 1990 Shell Oils/Autosport British Open Rally Championship proved to be a daunting affair. Renowned drivers such as Malcolm Wilson (Q8 Team Ford), Russell Brookes (Ford Sapphire 4x4 Cosworth), Colin McRae (R.E.D. built Cosworth Sierra) and David Llewellin (Toyota Celica GT4) competed. Mark Lovell joined the battle in a brand new Volkswagen Golf Rally 60 and the formidable Q8 team member Gwyndaf Evans was trying his luck in Group N.
