The 1987 World Rally Championship more than matched expectations of excitement in spite of the withdrawal of the Supercar Group B. This video travels the full twelve rounds, with superb camerawork from the very heart of the action. Lancia were favourites but BMW, Mazda and Audi were intent on not permitting it to be a runaway for the Italian marque. Reigning champion Juha Kankkunen was the driver they all wanted to beat and Timo Salonen and Ingvar Carlsson proved quite a threat, as did Eriksson and former champion Ari Vatanen. Not until the very last mile of the RAC Rally was the drivers' championship finally established in what had been a dramatic and thrilling season.
