Italian rally fans were out in force to cheer on championship leader Miki Biasion (Lancia Delta Integrale), attempting to clinch his first world crown at the 1988 San Remo Rally. The early asphalt sections would suit the Ford Sierra RS Cosworths of Auriol and Blomqvist, whilst Juha Kankkunen was hoping to restore pride in the Toyota Celica GTFour. Meanwhile Group N drivers Jorge Recalde (Lancia) and Pascal Gabon (Mazda 323) were level pegging coming to San Remo. It was an event marred by tragedy and a large number of incidents, but it was show rallying at its best. The cameras were in the heart of the action.
