When the snow forecast for the French Alps turned to rain, it effectively washed out any chance that Audi or Peugeot had of winning the 54th Monte Carlo Rally. The thaw ensured that the mountain special stages featured just about every type of surface imaginable. Snow and ice, wet and dry tarmac, all played their part and delighted the experienced Lancia team who had thoroughly prepared themselves.
The first round in the 1986 Tyre War therefore went to Pirelli, through Henri Toivonen and his new American co-driver Sergio Cresto, the Finn taking his second successive major win with the Delta S4, but doing it the hard way. When a spectator's car hit his Delta on Tuesday, not only was the chassis twisted but Henri spent the rest of the event taking injections to counter the pain from a hip injury.
