Introduction

Description

With almost 2000 miles of varying roads across 6 countries, the Pirelli Classic Marathon is the longest rally of its kind in the world for cars over 20 years old. And what cars! Jaguar, Daimler, Frazer Nash, Alvis, Sunbeam, MG, Morgan, to name just a few and these matched only by their drivers and navigators.

The cars set off from Tower Bridge, London, with 1988 winners Atkins and Lyle first to leave in their Triumph TR4 followed by Paddy Hopkirk teamed with Alec Poole in a superb sounding Mini Cooper S and Roger Clark and Tony Mason shortly after in their Ford Lotus Cortina. Timo Makinen was also in the pack and what a delight to see the indomitable Stirling Moss piloting his immaculate MGB. Armchair enthusiasts can enjoy the sheer pleasure of watching Stirling in action again on the Nurburgring during the speed test.

Or what about the speed test at Stelvio, Italy’s highest mountain pass? It has 48 hairpin corners from the floor of the valley to the summit 9000ft above sea level. Bogey time is 16mins for 8 and a half miles – all uphill! John Cheatham did it in 13minutes 17seconds, with flames from unburned fuel licking threateningly from his tailpipe. With a surprise finish, the Pirelli Classic Marathon recreates the Golden Age of British Rallying. Good camerawork, magnificent mountain scenery and an opportunity to watch some of the greatest cars of their era doing what they did best make this a highly collectable, quality production.
