Excitement was already at fever pitch as the 1987 European Rallycross championship reached rounds three and four in Finland and Spain. At the opening rounds in Austria and Sweden, the standard had been exceptionally high. Division One had been headed in both the opening rounds by Herbert Breiteneder (Volkswagen Golf GTi), while in Division Two both early rounds had been won by Seppo Nittymaki (Peugeot 205 Turbo 16).
